Unusual Crimson Lightning Photographed in Skies

A group of photographers in New Zealand have successfully captured images of crimson flashes, counted as the least common atmospheric displays on Earth, during which glowing scarlet illuminations appear in the atmosphere.

A Memorable Night of Discovery

This group of artists initially planned to shoot the night sky over the unique geological structures in the South Island of the country on 11 October, and unexpectedly witnessed the rare phenomenon.

Initially believing they would be blessed to get clear skies that evening, but their night turned into “a truly memorable experience,” an individual involved stated.

While reviewing his files for a Milky Way panorama and found he had photographed scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the photographer said. “It was unbelievable – there was a whole bunch of joyful noises and numerous expressions in the dark.”

Defining Red Sprites

These crimson flashes are electrical discharges in the upper atmosphere, generated by thunderstorms. In contrast to conventional electrical strikes that shoots towards the surface, red sprites shoot upwards towards the higher altitudes, creating appearances that resemble vertical forms, carrots or even marine creatures. The first photograph of a red sprite was recorded – accidentally – in that year, by a group at the University of Minnesota.

Momentary and Otherworldly Sightings

The phenomena last for such a short time – lasting just a millisecond – that they are rarely visible to the human sight, but an individual was fortunate. “I happened to be looking right at a sprite when it occurred – just a perfect coincidence viewing the correct area of the sky and I observed a brief red flash,” he commented.

Seeing the occurrences was a goal for the artist, an acclaimed dark sky artist. “It appears as if you’re seeing something that is not real, it feels otherworldly … the color is a profound crimson that is present only momentarily, so it is captivating to see.”

Advanced and Innovative Mastery

Photographing a red sprite demands a expertise in advanced imaging techniques, as well as an familiarity with scientific principles and innovative thinking, the individual said. “It’s a really involved type of photography that’s very rewarding as well.”

Another photographer commented it was among the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his life. “I was able to observe the galactic band illuminating above the horizon while these massive crimson strands of illumination moved above a storm at a great distance,” he said.

An Exceptional Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no additional photographs capturing scarlet electrical bursts and the night sky of the south in a single image.

“This was a singular occasion when you realize you are observing an event you’ll probably never see again.”
