Thousands Attend Pro-Palestine Demonstrations as Organisers Vow to Keep Protesting

Tens of thousands have rallied in various Australian cities at pro-Palestine demonstrations, with organisers promising to persist in activism after a ceasefire deal negotiated by the American leader in Gaza seemed to be taking effect.

Sydney Protest Attracts Many Participants

In the harbor city, the activist collective claimed a crowd of 30,000 had demonstrated from Hyde Park to another city park in the central business district after a planned rally to the Opera House was prohibited by the state judicial body last week.

NSW police estimated a crowd of 8,000 participated in the city demonstration, with a spokesperson reporting there had been "no significant incidents".

Countrywide Protests Remember Occasion

Protests were also conducted in Melbourne, eastern city and Western Australian city on the day of protest to remember the ongoing situation after militant actions on October 7th, 2023 resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths in the region.

"Regarding our cause, we'll definitely persist to protest for a free Palestine... for self-determination in Gaza, for aid to be allowed in and for locals to reconstruct their homes," said a coordinator.

Varied Responses to Peace Deal

Many protesters expressed hope that the ceasefire would lead to lasting peace. Several expressed concerns of the former president's role and called on activists to keep pressuring the federal leadership to apply measures and halt weapons commerce.

A participant, a Palestinian Australian based in Australia, shared he desired the agreement would allow him to assist his senior relative, who is still in Gaza without access to medical care, to the country, and to find and bury his brother, sister-in-law and their four children, who have been missing since 2023.

Local Jewish Population Holds Commemoration

Separately, thousands attended a Jewish community commemoration on Sunday night in the city's eastern areas to mark the second anniversary of 7 October. Geoffrey Majzner, the brother of Galit Carbone, an Australian citizen who was a casualty of the events, was arranged to talk.

There were prayers for the imminent repatriation of those still detained in the region and those killed on 7 October. The Israeli ambassador, the official, paid tribute to the determination of those affected. The audience expressed disapproval when he mentioned the head of government and the top diplomat.

Maritime Protesters Share Experiences

The local protest earlier included testimonies including several locals let go from imprisonment after the halting of the activist vessels in recent weeks.

Surya McEwen, his damaged arm after it was reportedly injured in an detention facility, told that not enough was known about the ceasefire deal. Global humanitarian groups, including Unrwa and Unicef, were organizing to reach the region.

"As long as there is a situation where there's a brutal and illegal blockade on the territory," stated McEwen, maritime demonstrators would persist in attempting to transport assistance via water.

Another participant, who arrived home on Friday, gave an emotional speech sharing his captivity experience with 83 other men in Israel's Ketziot prison.

Political Statements

The NSW Greens MP the politician told the crowd: "We cannot let a world where Trump determines the destiny of Palestinians to be the kind of world that we live in."

A different coordinator who filed the initial request to demonstrate at the famous location maintained that the demonstrators might have securely proceeded to the iconic waterfront location. The law enforcement official had earlier informed the court of appeal that the plan had "disaster written all over it".

The activist stated at the event: "Every single time the authorities try to restrict our protests or legal challenges, it wakes up a lot of people... to the importance of gathering and resist these measures."
