The Year 2026 Dubbed the Era of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a collection of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are staking their claim.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Frogs are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. But, their popularity has noticeably exploded in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are legitimate titles centered on frogs.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this phenomenon, I performed a deep dive into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the trend in gaming looks uniquely pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Honestly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs have inherent design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities facilitate a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.
Several the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.
If these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be entering a true croaking cultural moment.
