The Monarch Formally Strips Andrew of HRH Style and Princely Dignity
Through a definitive move, the reigning monarch has officially stripped the former Duke of York of his HRH style and his title of prince.
The changes were formalized by publishing royal documents under the official state seal, which were published in the UK's official public record.
The entry declared: “The king has been pleased by royal instruments under the Great Seal dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer be entitled to possess the designation of ‘HRH’ and the honorific status of ‘Prince’.”
Another record affirmed the stripping of the Duke of York from the peerage list, with immediate effect.
The notice stated: “His Majesty has been pleased to direct by warrant under his royal sign manual dated 30 October 2025 to instruct his government minister to ensure the titleholder to be removed from the peerage roll.”
Background of the Royal Action
The move comes after mounting controversy over Andrew's connections to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the posthumous publication of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.
Giuffre alleged that she was assaulted by Andrew after being trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein, claims that Mountbatten Windsor has always denied.
Mechanism of Removing Titles
Charles employed his monarchical powers—accepted rights held by the monarch—after discussions with Cabinet Office officials, instead of through parliamentary means.
Royal instruments and royal warrants are tools of this prerogative, used to grant or revoke honors and styles.
Because the Royal Highness designation is granted by such documents, it can be withdrawn through the same instrument.
Additional Actions and Support
After the initial announcement, the senior legal official was directed to draft the necessary documents for the removal of titles.
The decision also includes Andrew giving up his lease on Royal Lodge, a thirty-room Crown Estate property where he has resided for two decades.
The government endorsed the king's decision.
Exception
In spite of the stripping of honors, it was announced that Mountbatten Windsor will retain his South Atlantic medal, granted for his role as a Sea King helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands War.
