Substantial Online Disruption Hits Numerous Sites and Mobile Apps

A widespread internet outage has affected dozens websites and apps globally, as users experiencing troubles accessing the internet after problems at Amazon’s web hosting service.

The affected services encompass the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to a host of Amazon-managed operations including its main retail website and the Ring doorbell doorbell company.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was affected in addition to its affiliates Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were additional accounts of problems reaching the HMRC site on Monday morning. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring users turned to networks to complain their security devices were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, notifications of issues on particular apps reached the thousands for each app.

Amazon reported that the issue originated in the east coast of the United States at AWS, a unit that provides essential web framework for a host of firms, who utilize capacity on Amazon servers. The cloud platform is the biggest global cloud computing system.

Shortly after late night (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), the company announced “elevated error rates and delays” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the Atlantic seaboard of the US. The ripple effect was seen to disrupt platforms globally, with the problem monitoring service showing problems with the identical platforms in different parts of the world.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that monitors web disruptions, further indicated a surge in issues on Monday morning, with many of them found in the Virginia area, the location of the eastern US data center where the company stated the issues originated.
