Former FBI Head James Comey Files Denial Plea to Accusations of Lying US Legislators

James Comey court appearance
The former director has asserted his innocence about the allegations

Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the former director has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to congressional representatives and obstructing a legislative process.

Mr Comey's legal representative submitted the response acting as his counsel in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

His attorney announced he would attempt to have the legal matter thrown out for several reasons including that his defendant, a opponent of former President Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was formally accused just days after Donald Trump pressured his attorney general to take action against him.

Court Developments

In court on mid-week, the defense counsel Mr Fitzgerald advised the court they intended to present multiple petitions to throw out the proceedings before a court case, stating the legal action was vindictive and that a government lawyer was wrongfully assigned to take over the case.

Mr Comey's legal matter was originally handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under influence from the former president after his examination into a different opponent - the New York official - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

The former director appeared in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on Wednesday, conversing with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his spouse, Patrice Failor and child his daughter, a government attorney who the previous administration terminated.

After listening to the magistrate read his constitutional guarantees and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, Mr Comey was asked if he grasped the accusations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he informed the court.

Historical Information

James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was terminated about several months into Trump's first administration as president. At the time, he was overseeing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Russia and the election effort.

While in office, James Comey triggered a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he stated just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was examining Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Indictments against the candidate were not filed, leading to negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys allege the former director provided false information to Congress during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he deceived the Senate by stating he had not authorized an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to news outlets details about the government examinations.

Prosecutors also allege James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, hinder and impede" the panel by providing untrue information to it.

Public Statements

Via social media Mr Comey posted to his Instagram after he was charged, he said he was innocent and accused Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"We have been aware for considerable time that there are consequences to standing up to the former president," he said. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a trial."

The charges against James Comey emerged after Trump published on social media calling for his top legal official, the attorney general, prosecute the former director and other people.
