Brave Train Employee Endures Severe Injuries During Mass Knife Attack on High-Speed Service
A brave railway employee who stepped in to save passengers during a multiple stabbing incident on a express train has suffered critical injuries, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
Particulars of the Terrifying Event
CCTV video reportedly depicts the staff member attempting to stop the attacker as the train traveled between Peterborough and Huntingdon in the county. Witnesses described a terrifying 14-minute duration after the train departed Peterborough, with bloodied victims fleeing through compartments.
The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in detention for questioning. Authorities declared a significant event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Emergency Response and Consequences
The event on Saturday night led to 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several people have since been released from medical care.
A witness recorded the suspect waving a big knife and being subdued with a Taser as he faced officers on the station. He was allegedly heard yelling, "Kill me, kill me."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the courageous member of rail staff whose relatives are being supported by specialist personnel,” said a senior police officer.
Labor Reaction and Appeals for Measures
Rail associations were swift to praise staff and demand more action. A labor leader said he would be “seeking urgent discussions with authorities, rail employers and law enforcement to ensure that we have the best available support, tools and effective protocols in place”.
A different association representative urged the rail company and authorities “to act quickly to review security, to help the impacted workers, and to ensure that no incident like this happens again”.
Operator Commended for Quick Thinking
The operator who halted the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been praised by association representatives for doing “exactly the right thing”.
“He did not halt the service in the center of two stops where it’s obviously difficult for the emergency services to access, but he continued traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was almost already there,” stated a association official.
Further Information
Authorities stated they received the first distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An witness recounted at first wondering if the situation was a holiday joke, but quickly understood from people's faces that it was serious.
Police have stated there is nothing to suggest the incident was a terrorist incident and have requested the public to provide with any additional details.
Rail operations on the impacted line are anticipated to have disruption until the following day, with travelers advised to postpone their journeys where feasible.
